Kiss Me

I held Danielle once when she was a baby.

Danielle went to McCann Tech and became a cosmetologist, but I think she also studied cashiering. She had wanted to be a cashire when she was a child. She became a cashire at Burger King and Aubochon Hardware when I had last talked with her.

After finishing an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel in the BCC activities office around 1984/85 I was still buzzing from the tastefully elegant spell Fitzgerald's books cast on a reader. Try it if you haven't, it is better than taking drugs. I don't remember which one it was, though. Hmm. Maybe I was taking drugs but just dont remember that either ! It was then that I believe I wrote the lyrics to Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me." there in the office while doing work study. The feeling reminded me of the time Danielle dressed up for Halloween in a pink one-piece bathing suit with gold glitter all over her face, arms, and legs. Just lovely and ethereal, almost like a dream.

Danielle and her friends

When Danielle was about 14, she had started at McCann Tech, and her friends from our neighborhood went to Mt. Greylock. Danielle's neighborhood friends became estranged from her, as did I with her two brothers who had been my friends. We fell out of touch when they had gone to McCann and I still continued at Mt Greylock.

Because Danielle didn't have her friends to hang out with, she started coming to visit me. I just adored her. I was about 20 or 21 when this happened and Danielle was about 13 or 14. I was completely obsessed with Lynne at the time, and I decided I had better not start hanging out with Danielle, but it would have been nice for me to have a neighborhood friend then, too.

Sneaking onto the golf course

Danielle asked if I wanted to sneak onto the golf course at twilight and play golf with her like I used to with her brothers. They and I would go up to the 14th fairway just before sundown—when the paying golfers had quit, but there was still plenty of light to play.

The path from Danielle's house to the golf course led to the tree house.

The broken tree house:

- Leigh Nash

There was a kid who once lived in what was then the last house on the West side of Water St heading towards town in our neighborhood...oh, what was his name...was it Cheesebro, or was it another kid after him ? Mr Lowry owned or had something to do with the house. I forget now. Anyway that kid's father had built the kid a tree house up in the woods behind their house. Danielle's brothers and I kind of inherited it after that family had moved away.

The broken tree house was broken by Jimmy Purple and his gang of Cole Avenue kids who attacked it at night, long after Danielle, Harry, Joe, John Weedon, and I went home for dinner. I guess it was supposed to be some kind of initiation into their gang, but dinner overcame our desire to join.

One good thing came out of Relations with Jimmy Purple and his friends though...he had told us he built a kind of trail up on Ide Road where he lived and rode his bicycle like a dirt bike on it.

we built our own trail and took my 5 speed chopper bike and put regular forks and front wheel on it a rode it just like BMX bikes which we didnt know about yet. Actually, I guess my 5 speed stick shifter bike kind of was an early mountain bike with the fat rear wheel and all.
