Boys of Summer

Edmund Fitzgerald's wife's name was Elizabeth Fitzgerald.

Megan's sister was Liz.

She ran cross country in high school as did I and she asked me why I quit and I told her 'to play football'.

She asked if I was any good and I asked her if she remembered the football team being undefeated 4 years in a row and she said yes. Then I told her the first game I started as quarterback was the first game of that streak and she screamed.

I believe I wrote the lyrics 'remember how you made me crazy remember how I made you scream' based on that after I had driven past Lake Pontoosuck and Wahcoah Park where there was a highschool baseball team practicing before passing Liz's apartment on Center Street in Pittsfield one day.

I could be wrong on this one, though because timeline of the song being released according to Wiki was about the time I knew Liz...

When Liz was moving back to Williamstown after school I guess early summer '84 I asked the Dolans if I could borrow their S-10 truck to help her move

I parked up the street aways to get a feel for the situation but her dad saw me and waved me to pull up...he looked angry so I bailed and took off...

I think that was when she started to really hate me

she called me a 'green queerball of a man' - because all of my clothes had been stolen when I stopped to get coffee on the way to the laundromat and all I had were a green pair of sweat pants and a green and black lumberjack shirt.

Ooh that hurt.

...But now it helps me with my timeline...hmm yes that would have been summer '84 when i had been living behind the college...and Don Henley's 'Boys of Summer' was released October '84.

Liz's sister Megan's book:

Aw, their dad just passed away :'

- Alternative Cremation and Funeral Service

'Nobody on the road Nobody on the beach I feel it in the air The summer's out of reach Empty lake, empty streets The sun goes down alone I'm driving by your house Though I know you're not home But I can see you- Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone I never will forget those nights I wonder if it was a dream Remember how you made me crazy? Remember how I made you scream Now I don't understand what happened to our love But babe, I'm gonna get you back I'm gonna show you what I'm made of I can see you- Your brown skin shinin' in the sun I see you walking real slow and you're smilin' at everyone I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone Out on the road today, I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac A little voice inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back" I thought I knew what love was What did I know? Those days are gone forever I should just let them go but- I can see you- Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone I can see you- Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got that hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone'
