Semicharmed Kind of Life

 

I believe I wrote the lyrics to Semicharmed Kind of Life around 1985/6 after reading a Berkshire Community College library copy of Rolling Stone Magazine which had an article about a new type of drug that was becoming popular, crystal meth.


As I recall, I had just returned from riding my bike to Rochester, NY where I met Cathy. Which means this would have been in the fall of 1985.


Because of the article I felt like trying to write a rap song about the new drug, but possibly because of my emotional state caused by the feelings I had for both Cathy and Lynne what I was living was sort of a turn of the 19th century dream life where everything had a charming patina or glow imbued in and with it.


Now I would liken it to a degeurotype color photo, but at the time I though that was what many novels I had read described as sepia toned.

Hello From Venus

  Sunday, June 2, 2024  Posted this to a Rolling Stone article on FB about a member of the US State Dept who had inspired a Neil Young song: Spent years trying to find out what happened to me and about 3 weeks ago I found out. Former ambassador Kurt Tong's favorite song was Rockin' in the Freeworld . The Atlas missile system was the first US ICBM. The Atlas rocket was the first to go to Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus , with the Mariner space program and Pioneer 10 space program. Kurt called once after Dave did when I was living with Dorothy in Florida. It kind of creeped me out a little, because Kurt had never called me before, and I was afraid something might be wrong with Dad. But he was OK. 100 Years

  For me, I recall writing a poem about looking back over the years of my life when I was in my 30s. I was living in my cabin on the St Pete Clearwater border off 9th Street. I recall thinking about the ride back from a club with Cathy driving her Pontiac Sunbird like a professional racecar driver - she was an amazing driver ! I had thought about that night a lot and I thought I had figured out it had been in 1986, but it must have been the summer and fall of 1985 when I met Cathy. I would estimate when I believe I wrote the poem at the mid 1990s. 'The sea is high...'
